Makefree May

About

Makefree May invites Australians to go makeup free and transform lives around the world. Women of all ages are increasingly exposed to expectations of ‘beauty’, pressuring them to change the way they look. Makefree May encourages women to join the month without makeup and celebrate that it’s who they are and what they do that makes them beautiful. All funds raised go directly to transforming lives and communities around the world through Human Kind Project. Wednesday, 1 May 2019, MEL: Australians are encouraged to go makeup free and raise money for Human Kind Project this month, as a part of Makefree May. The month-long movement asks participants to take a step back from makeup and see if they feel differently about something that isn’t as necessary as it perhaps feels, to offer something very necessary and life-changing to the lives of other women around the world. Makefree May isn’t a war on makeup; it’s just a break from a societal norm that many women participate in without question. Australian women love makeup, they love the freedom of expression it offers, and that it’s finally accessible to a much more diverse collection of people. However, there is growing pressure on young girls to change the way they look using makeup, to meet the media’s expectations of beauty. Eliza Gower, Community Lead, Makefree May, says, “Makefree May is giving women the opportunity to take a step back from makeup for the month, and show young girls that it’s who they are and what they do with their lives that makes them beautiful. It also gives women the chance to take a break from their typical makeup routines and see if they feel differently about the face they were born with.” Australians who want to join the Makefree May movement can sign up at makefreemay.org, invite their family and friends to donate, and go makeup free during the month. A month without makeup may be confronting to some, so if giving it up entirely is too much, then participants can simply choose one thing to leave behind, whether it is foundation, mascara, or lipstick. Jacinta McDonell, Founder, Human Kind Project, said, “Makefree May is a powerful initiative that can make a real difference to the way we talk and feel about makeup. It’s about giving women the freedom to choose, question and consider why it is we use makeup, and express gratitude for the freedoms we’re afforded here in Australia, that many women in other countries are not.” All funds raised for Human Kind Project during Makefree May will go towards transforming lives and communities around the world through vital education, health and microfinance initiatives to empower women. About Makefree May Makefree May is a movement inviting people to go makeup free for the month of May to raise funds that will help empower and educate women through the Human Kind Project.
